Pilot Rewatch: The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead – Days Gone Bye
Season 1, Episode 1 – Original Air Date: 10/31/2010
It’s that time of year, the time that has my favorite season and Holiday. I was looking for something to watch that would represent the season, that’s when I realized that it has been a very long time since I have watched The Walking Dead pilot episode.
This series opens with a still clean shaven (well, slightly stubbly) Rick, in uniform, looking for gasoline for his car. Hmm… I wonder if he will find any.
Oh, hey. I wonder who is making that scuffling sound. Oh, it’s OK, just a little girl picking up her stuffed teddy bear.
“Little girl?” … Oh… Nevermind… *bang* You know, this is where I start to wonder… Why is zombie girl stopping to pick up a stuffed animal? Do the “walkers” actually have some sort of instinct like that?
After the opening credits we are taken back to when life was still normal. And all Rick had to worry about were marital problems, and getting shot by criminals. We’re treated to a scene that clearly tells us Shane is a douche. How can anyone stand this guy? Soon the boys are dispatched to chase some bad men. Things go bad.
“That son of a bitch shot me. You believe that?” Umm, yes Rick. We do. You were out in the open, approaching the bad guys car, after having been warned by the dispatcher that these guys will shoot a cop (because they already have). As Rick, and Shane have this little conversation, they are rudely interrupted by yet another bad guy. Who, instead of trying to discretely slip away while not one of the four officers was paying attention, instead decides to draw attention to himself by shooting Rick.
Of course that last shot is pretty bad, Rick lands in the hospital, and is seriously out of it. He eventually comes to much later, and finds himself abandoned in the hospital. He wanders around, trying to figure out what the heck has happened, and finds this…
He managed to figure out opening the doors would be bad. He eventually stumbles outside, to find a lot of dead bodies. Disbelief, and confusion clear on his face as he roams around. He decides to head home, hoping to find his wife and son. He doesn’t find them, but ends up getting hit in the face with a shovel. Rick just can’t catch a break.
OK, maybe he can, at least a small one. It turns out he finally found actual alive people, a father and his son. Ricks new friend explains the situation to him, telling him all about the “walkers”. Later that night walkers are roaming the area, and because the kid isn’t traumatized enough, apparently his mother (who was turned into a walker) likes to show up at the house, even trying the doorknob to get inside. It seems like Walkers were a lot more aware in the pilot episode.
I love that once Rick is better, one of the first things he does (after taking a shower), is to put on his Sheriff’s uniform.
Rick parts ways with his new friends, he is off to find his wife, son, and any signs of civilization that he can. Using the radio in his cruiser he calls out to anyone who may be able to hear him, a group of survivors pick up his signal, but he can’t hear them respond. Oh hey, there’s Shane among the group. That douche. And, of course, Rick’s wife and son are there.
Back to Rick, finding gasoline is proving difficult… Oh, cool! A horse! Now we’re talking. Come on horsie, let us head into the big city…
On second thought… Maybe heading into the city wasn’t the best idea ever… RUN!
There is, of course, chaos and insanity as Rick tries to flee from the Walkers, he miraculously doesn’t get bitten, the horse wasn’t so lucky. Rick climbs into a tank to escape the Walkers, who are literally everywhere, surrounding him. A few minutes later we hear a voice over the radio, “Hey you, dumbass.”.
Ah, the tension. How will Rick get out of this?
