Geek Finds: Goodwill

Geek Finds: Goodwill

When I first started shopping at Goodwill I was very put off. It just looked like a bunch of junk, amid chaos, and it felt overwhelming. But I eventually got use to it, and I also realized I could find some fun, geeky, stuff there.

I have found the occasional really good deal, that I couldn’t pass up with things like a Coach purse & wallet (yes, they were authentic), a retired (never used) Yankee Candle, that has actually sold on ebay for $70, and new clothing still with original tags. Basically, stuff that resellers would love, but my typical shopping there is usually for something geeky and fun. Today I thought I would share some of those finds with you.

Being a life long Doctor Who fan girl I was happy to find a TARDIS throw pillow, in really good shape, and a VHS tape of the Fourth Doctor episode, The Robots of Death. The pillow was only about $4, and the VHS was .69 cents

Some books I found there include a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Quiz Book (from the first 3 seasons), Goosebumps, Animorphs, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, an Xmen Graphic Novel, and a DC Comics Superhero Society book. Plus 6 volumes of The Punisher graphic novel, at only $1 each. Books at Goodwill are dirt cheap, so always give them a look.

Sticking with their book section for a minute, one day I found a ton of Buffy and Angel comics (plus an Angel graphic novel). I couldn’t help myself, and I bought them all.

I don’t typically buy games there, because they’re usually a disaster, bad shape, missing pieces. But I did find a few I had to get, including The Logo Board Game for only $2.99, which had everything still in it, a 90s Trivia card game (still sealed) for about .69 cents, and a Clue VHS game (I don’t remember the price).

Other random finds include: Plushies including: Nick Wilde (Zootopia), Various anime ones, Neopets, etc. A Nightmare Before Christmas CD, various superhero and Disney movies on Bluray & DVD, and some gaming T-Shirts (Zelda, and Pokemon). Which brings me to the fact that if you’re into graphic tees, you should NOT neglect their t-shirt section, they’re only $1.99. Sure, there are a lot of blah shirts in the mix, but it is highly likely you will find some stuff you’ll love. Note: ALWAYS check the condition of clothing there. I’ve seen stuff make it out to the floor with rips and stains, but most of it looks fine.

I’ll end this by adding, if you’re short on cash, and need new clothes for interviews, school, a new job, then hit up your local Goodwill. You can find some good stuff there, and could put together a decent wardrobe for cheap. Keep an eye on the “color of the week” (50% off), and on Sunday you can shop clothes from the color of the week for only .99.
