Razer Blackwidow Mechanical Keyboard Review
With the recent release of Battlefield 4 and other games, I was looking at some of my PC peripherals and thinking, these need an upgrade. So I purchased the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Keyboard, and even splurged for the Battlefield 4 edition. I figure I should share my experience, and I have to start with, everything people say about mechanical keyboards is right, this is awesome!
I never really got the mechanical keyboard thing, didn’t figure it could actually make that much of a difference. I mean, you press a key, stuff happens. Now, I’m still not deep into it, but I can just tell you, the feel of playing, and even just straight typing on a mechanical keyboard is so much nicer. The key presses just feel more… satisfying somehow. It’s hard to describe it really. In comparison, my keyboard at work just feels mushy.
The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Battlefield 4 Edition has Cherry MX Blue switches, which means this keyboard really has the loud clicking noises. I’ve had people comment when I’m on voice chat about hearing me typing as I’m playing Battlefield, just from me pressing the keys to move around. They are quite loud, and I actually like it. If I had this at the office, that would be different, because I’m sure I’d be annoying all my co-workers.
I really like how heavy this keyboard is, I’d call it about 3 pounds or so. It feels much more solid than my old SteelSeries MERC board. It also very much stays in place, where as a lighter keyboard could be moved around inadvertently during gameplay.
Other features of the BlackWidow keyboard include a game mode which disables the Windows key, so you don’t accidentally boot yourself out of a game. It’s also very well back-lit, which is a nice change for me since I often game in a dark room. The lighting has a sliding scale of brightness levels, and a pulsate options, or you can just turn it off. Unlike the standard BlackWidow Ultimate, the Battlefield 4 version glows orange. There is also a USB port and Headphone and Mic jacks, in case you need them.
One of the main features of the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate is the row of macro keys, which I have used precisely zero times. Yep, I have yet to really figure a use for those keys, and just haven’t looked into what other people use that for yet. Playing mostly Battlefield, Assassin’s Creed, and Hearthstone lately, I think I’m kinda in the wrong games to need those keys. Perhaps once I dip back into World of Warcraft I will have a need for macro keys. It is pretty neat how you can press the macro record key and instantly record to your macro key. I need to stop saying macro key.
Macro key.
Final Thoughts
I have to say, I’m really enjoying this keyboard. The only thing I miss from my old keyboard are the separate media buttons, but it’s not like that’s something I use a lot of. The pros of a solid mechanical keyboard like this far outweigh that slight annoyance. And while ~$140 dollars does sound pretty pricey for a keyboard, I don’t regret the spend. It works great, and it looks pretty awesome on the desk as well.
And if you’re not a Battlefield fan like me, there’s always the regular Razer BlackWidow Ultimate that works just as well, and is a standard Razer green back-lit. Either way, you’ll have a very high quality keyboard that should last you a very long time.
