Watching: Outlander Seasons 1 & 2
For years I have been wanting to see what Outlander was about. There were a couple of times I thought about buying the DVDs, because I am never going to subscribe to… whoever it is that runs the show, and it seemed that no one was going to stream it. Then suddenly Netflix dropped the first two seasons. Yes! Finally I can check this show out!
Season 1:
Where do I begin? Overall, I found it watchable enough, and wanted to see what would happen next. Sure, Claire and Jamie could be a bit annoying, but no big deal. It’s the first season, they’re finding their characters, it’s often like that in the first season of a show. Jamie seems a bit too “childish” considering his age and the things he has been though. His love for Claire is questionable at best. I can’t help but wonder, why does he love her? She is simply irritating. Claire has been the most annoying character on the show, but I did try to give her a break because I’m sure traveling to the past and being stuck in such weird situations (some of which she creates, ahem) messes with a person. I mean, she makes MANY stupid choices, jumps to a lot of conclusions, and doesn’t calmly communicate stuff she should. One of the biggest issues was the fact that she doesn’t seem to appreciate she is in the past, a vastly different time than her own. So she should probably shut the hell up, observe, learn, and fit in until she can quietly find a way back. The show seems to try to imply that she is trying to do just that, but she isn’t. Because, you know, unnecessary drama. But hey, I guess I liked it well enough, and maybe it gets better in season 2!
Season 2:
What the what? Is this even the same show? Are these the same characters? Claire manages to be even more annoying than she was in the first season. The show has become painfully boring, it’s worse than when Rick and the crew were stuck on the farm in season two of The Walking Dead. Claire is still the worst character on the show. I can’t stand seeing her stupid face (which is ALL the time), with her constantly furrowed brows because she is always angry, or worried, or sad, or maybe that’s just how she looks through any emotion because her face is now stuck that way. She is arrogant, pretentious, annoying, overly dramatic, and just a massive bitch. I honestly struggle to see any good qualities in her. I’ve seen others talk about her being “strong and independent”, I don’t see her that way at all. It’s more like she wants others to see her like that, so she puts on an act. Also, I still keep wondering why the hell Jamie, who seems like a decent enough guy (most of the time), would be in love with this dreadful person. She doesn’t deserve his dedication to her. Then I realize he’s damaged in many ways, and she feeds into that. Basically, this is a toxic, codependent, relationship.
I just don’t like this show, and I don’t care about the characters. The best things about this show was the music, and the scenery.
Dear Internet,
You have lied to me. This show isn’t anywhere near as good as you have led me to believe. If I want to watch a historical romance drama I will stick with Korean shows, which I enjoy much more than anything Outlander has to offer.
