The Problem with Streaming Services
These days if you want to stream a movie or TV show you have about a million different platforms to choose from… Which brings me to my first problem with streaming services.
There are too many streaming services
It’s like having cable, and you’re either the rich kid who has all the channels (Netflix, Hulu, Paramount, Disney, Amazon, HBO Max, etc), and can’t figure out what to watch, or you’re the poor kid who has the basic plan (one or two paid “affordable” streaming services, and free ones), and it feels like there’s nothing much on.
I miss the old days, where we had a couple streaming services, like Netflix and Hulu, and they had contracts with the TV networks and movie companies.
“Original content”
Don’t get me wrong, some of the original content is great, but a lot of it is bad, and you don’t realize it exists, because they don’t even advertise it because they know it’s bad. That content isn’t free to create, which means they will eventually raise their prices, because someone has to pay for that content… Especially when they start losing subscriptions, because another new service popped up, and everyone went over to that one (*cough*DisneyPlus*cough*).
If everyone insists on having their own streaming service, then I wish they would cut back on the original content. I know some is important, to draw in new viewers, but… Like, does Netflix really need so many bad original movies?
In my opinion this all got out of control because cable was too expensive and they refused to go down on their prices, they thought they had the monopoly, and no one would leave them. Then slowly people started to cut the cord, and more people followed. With not as many people watching cable, those contracts with streaming services didn’t offer much anymore, so everyone started their own streaming service to get in on the whole streaming trend. Now we find ourselves back at square one, like when we had cable. Spending too much money, on too many channels, just to get to see all the content we like.
