The Librarians
Back in 2004 I decided to watch a TV movie called “The Librarian: Quest for the Spear“, it was just something to kill some time. I ended up really enjoying it, and wishing it would be turned into a TV show. Because quite simply, I wanted more.
Guess what I just found out? In 2014 they finally made a TV show based off the movie! I assume I hadn’t heard about it because I no longer have cable, and my TV viewing is limited to what I watch on Hulu and Netflix. In case you’re unfamiliar with the whole thing let me give you a little background on the original movie…
The Movie:
It was a story about a socially awkward guy in his 30s, Flynn, who is a “professional student”, and still lives with his mom. Unbeknownst to him, his life is about to change dramatically. He gets a magical invitation to show up for an interview with the library. It’s kind of like getting a letter to Hogwarts.
The library turns out to be more than it appears. There is a secret area that houses magical ancient artifacts, and Flynn is now “The Librarian” who is in charge of recovering lost magical artifacts before they can be used for evil. This leads him into a life of excitement and adventure.
They made two more TV movies, one in 2006, and another in 2008. Since it seemed like a movie was coming out every two years I was disappointed when one didn’t come out in 2010, and thought TNT was done with the whole thing. So I’m pretty happy to see there is now a TV show, which was just recently renewed for a third season.
The Series:
The TV show has our Librarian passing the torch in a sense. He is no longer the only Librarian, there are three new ones, and there is now a Guardian to oversee their safety. Each Librarian adds their own unique talent to the team, and we get to watch them learn and grow into their assigned roles.
Flynn (Noah Wyle) is not the main character in the show, which is probably because Wyle has another TNT show (Falling Skies) that he’s working on, but he does appear in some episodes of The Librarians.
My Thoughts:
It had been awhile since I’ve seen the movies, and as I sat down to watch the show I instantly thought Flynns Librarian had a personality that reminded me of The Doctor, and seeing the library expand into more than it was reminded me of Warehouse 13. That all made me very happy.
I definitely suggest checking out this show. It instantly became one of my favorites. It’s an enjoyable watch. Fun, quirky, and I find the characters likable. You can watch season 1 and the first two movies, on Hulu.
