The Guild
On July 27th 2007, back when I obsessively payed World of Warcraft, Felicia Day dropped The Guild on YouTube. I’m having trouble processing that this year will mark 15 years since then. It just doesn’t seem that long ago to me, yet, somehow, it does. It’s very confusing.
Geeks and gamers instantly took to The Guild, and couldn’t get enough. Felicia was pretty much crowned the Queen of Geekdom, and we all loved her for bringing us this creation. Some of us, who may have obsessively watched Buffy, even remembered her as one of the potential slayer.
She was inspired to make The Guild because of her addiction to World of Warcraft, and how it had effected her trying to get acting jobs. So she decided to make something of her own, based on something she loved. It wasn’t actually WoW in “The Guild”, it was simply called “The Game”, and had elements of other MMOs as well, so people who didn’t play Warcraft could also relate to it.
I’ve been feeling nostalgic for those days where I stayed up late playing World of Warcraft, munching on teriyaki beef jerky, and drinking Faygo Red Pop. Back when it was just on the first expansion (Burning Crusade, 2007), that was when I started to really get into the game. So “The Guild” hit at a really good time for me. When I wasn’t playing WoW, I was usually on YouTube, watching viral videos, and random things that made me laugh. They were simpler times.
Over the years The Guild cast have often reunited, and still seem pretty close. If you go on their YouTube channel you’ll find some videos of them gaming, playing D&D, and Among Us. I really miss watching their show, they were definitely the kind of people I would have been hanging out with.
