Pilot Rewatch: Supernatural
"Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole" ~ Dean Winchester
Supernatural – Pilot
Season 1, Episode 1 – Original air date: 10/13/2005
The show opens at night, on the Winchester home in Lawrence, Kansas, 22 years ago (from 2005, when this aired) with. There’s the happy family, mom (Mary), Dad (John), a young Dean, and Sam who’s still just a baby.
Of course, this is where it all begins. After waking up in the middle of the night by the baby monitor, Mary discovers a man (she assumes is her husband) standing over Sams crib. She leaves him to it, and wanders off, only to find her husband had fallen asleep in the living room. She rushes off to check on Sam, screams, waking her husband who heads off to see what’s wrong. He finds Sam laying in the crib, seemingly unharmed, then notices blood dripping down…Then there’s flames…
Clearly this point in the story is where Mary Winchester dies, and John Winchester raises his boys as demon hunters. Always moving, always hunting, trying to find the demon that killed the boys mother.
The next scene after their mothers death, shows us Sam and his girlfriend getting ready for a college Halloween party. This part of the story establishes that Sam left hunting behind, in an attempt to have more of a normal life.
Clearly having a normal “safe” life can’t last. Later on back at their apartment, Sam wakes to an intruder skulking around, he struggles with him, and it turns out the intruder is Dean.
The reunited brothers have a chat about their dad, who apparently has gone missing. Dean talks Sam into helping him look for him, just for a couple of days. Then Sam intends on getting back to his college life, and his girlfriend (who apparently becomes a SHIELD agent…). So they head off, looking into the last case they knew their father was working on before he disappeared. “The Woman in White”, a female ghost who seduces men, then kills them.
Of course there’s more to the story in this episode, but if you don’t already know it, then you haven’t seen it yet, and if that’s the case, then I think you should just go watch it.
My Thoughts:
I remember when I originally saw Supernatural advertised, my initial thought was, “Oh, look at the pretty boys. Hope they’re not the only thing worth watching in the show.”. Yep, I was worried it was only going to be about eye candy, and that the show would have no substance. Turns out, I frelling love this show, and not just for the cute boys (but they sure are nice to look at). After it had been on for a few years I managed to get Ken and Amanda into it, and now they love it too.
One of my favorite things on the show is the way Sam and Dean relate to one another, the jokes, the banter, and of course there’s the concern for one another. The first season of Supernatural has a lot of stories based on superstitions, and myths. But there really is so much more to it, and it keeps evolving over the years. It’s one of my favorite shows, and I love going back and re-watching episodes (or whole seasons).
