Overlooked Sci-Fi TV Shows
There are a few science fiction TV Shows that we love, but feel as if they are typically overlooked in the nerd community.
Some shows went unnoticed when they first aired, like Firefly, but we all know that it now has a massive following. Which is pretty amazing, really. Other shows have not been so lucky. Granted, a couple of these shows have had some level of success, and have dedicated fan bases, but I’ve noticed that not many of my nerdy friends have ever watched them, which is what prompted me to write this post.
We go to conventions and see tons of cosplayers for shows like Doctor Who (I remember a time this would be a rare site), Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica. We also hear everyone declaring their love for these shows, even long after some of them have gone off the air. Certain shows on the other hand, well, they get a bit neglected. A couple of these you may not have even heard of, or forgot they existed.
Farscape – An astronaut takes his experimental space shuttle, accidentally creates a wormhole, which he gets pulled into. What awaits him on the other side are adventures, aliens, and worlds he never knew existed. He ends up on-board a living ship, with escaped prisoners. Will he ever find his way home?
This is one of my all time favorite shows, and anytime I meet another fan I get wicked excited. This year at GenCon Ken (the other half of Awkward Geeks) dressed as John Crichton, we spotted someone dressed as Chiana, so we actually chased her down to take a picture.
Babylon 5 – It’s ten years after the Earth-Minbari War. Commander Sinclair takes command of a space station, orbiting a planet in neutral space. At a crossroads of interstellar commerce and diplomacy, Sinclair must try to establish peace and prosperity between various interstellar empires.
Released the same year as Star Trek: DS9 it was mocked for being a copycat show, and it kind of was. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t original, and it features an interesting array of characters. It’s not for everyone, but if you haven’t seen it, give it a shot before judging!
The Invisible Man – A misunderstood convict has a ‘quicksilver gland’ placed in his head, all thanks to his scientist brother. This gland grants him the ability to turn invisible, but he has to take a serum to keep from going into ‘quicksilver madness’. Which means he is tied down to a mysterious organization that controls this serum, and he has to work for them.
This show had a 2 hour premiere on the Sci-Fi channel, and I instantly loved it. They almost cancelled it after the first season, mostly because of the expense, but fans were able to bring it back. Sadly, they couldn’t save it after the second season.
The Chronicle – A highly qualified reporter can’t find work, and ends up accepting a job with a tabloid. There he learns that all the supernatural events they report on are actually true.
This is another Sci-Fi channel show, if I recall correctly it aired in the time slot preceding The Invisible Man. It’s a show I would have loved to see more of.
Special Unit 2 – This show focused on a select group of Chicago cops, who happen to hunt all the monsters who inhabit Chicago.
I believe it had the time slot after Enterprise, but unfortunately it didn’t bring in the viewers. Not always the best acting, but it was a fun show to watch.
Let us know if you have watched any of these, and tell us what shows you feel went overlooked.
