Guilty Pleasure: Korean Dramas
Over the years I have had various “guilty pleasures”, a more recent(ish) one that I developed is for Korean dramas. At the beginning I wouldn’t admit to liking them, it just seemed so…silly?
The most amusing thing to me is that I will actually watch romance, which is something I never watch (hence why I was reluctant to admit I was watching these dramas). I’m really all about my sci-fi, and fantasy. I’m not sure why I find romance more enjoyable to watch when it’s a cheesy, cutesy, usually over the top, Korean drama. I just do. If you’re into KDrama, please feel free to recommend something to me!
I’m a bit absentminded, and don’t remember the names of most of the dramas that I’ve seen, but here are a few that stood out to me…
The very first one I watched was Boys Before Flowers, it’s been awhile so I’m considering a rewatch. I originally decided to check it out because I was somewhat familiar with the manga it was based on. Put simply: It’s about a poor girl who ends up the center of attention of a group of cute, wealthy boys. There are some other elements in play as well. This one actually turned out to be pretty addictive.
Rooftop Prince had me curious because it mixed an element of fantasy into it. It involves a Prince from the Joseon era, who mysteriously time travels to modern day Seoul, along with a special team he had assembled. Of course he meets a girl, there always has to be someone for romantic potential. Duh! The girl also happens to look like the sister of his dead wife.
Big is one that I had to check out because it was inspired by the Tom Hanks movie of the same name. It’s not a remake of the classic film, this K-Drama has a completely different story. There is a young student (I believe he was a teenager?), who gets into a bad accident, he awakens to find his soul was switched with that of a man who was soon to be married.
