Book Review: Treehugger by Kea Alwang
Book One in the Based on a Dream series
Kea Alwang was kind enough to send us Treehugger to review. It’s a young adult science fiction fantasy, the first book in her Based on a Dream series.
About:
“Does it really matter what world you’re on when trying to find
yourself? For fourteen-year-old Chloe, planet hopping is a gift. Righting the
wrongs of the multiverse on behalf of a mysterious life form is a privilege.
Leading a double life has its perks. Being Earth-born, however, simply bites.”
Chloe is struggling to fit into a normal life. She’s treated as an outcast, and is bullied by her classmates. She also doesn’t get any comfort at home, her family is distant, and they don’t understand her. One of Chloe’s problems is that she happens to have a secret life, one she can’t share with anyone. At least not anyone on Earth. Chloe is also known as Star, a Jacondorian sentinel. With the help of Ethimarrow she has some pretty awesome abilities, and she can easily travel to other worlds.
Star despises her Earth life, the only place she feels comfortable is on Jacondor with her closest friends, CK and Leada, who each happen to be from other worlds of their own.
My Thoughts:
It may have been awhile since my teen years, but I found the main character very relatable. I can most certainly identify with being bullied, and feeling like you don’t belong, even within your own family. When I was younger I used want to escape from my real life, that meant I was usually getting lost in the worlds I found between the pages of a book, or I was imaging going on adventures, traveling through space and time with The Doctor. Honestly, I can still relate to those feelings.
Smartly written, entertaining, and a great read for anyone who loves science fiction. It may be a young adult novel, but I believe geek girls of any age will be able to enjoy, and appreciate this book.
I’ve already started in on the second book of the series, expect a review on Risktaker in a couple of weeks!
