Binge Watch: Julie and the Phantoms
Julie and the Phantoms is a musical comedy-drama series on Netflix, and a remake of a show called Julie e os Fantasmas. Basically, it’s about a teen girl who ends up with a band of three ghosts, that she has an unknown connection to.
Summary:
The ghosts died in 1995 when they were 17 years old, then they appeared in Julies life in 2020 when she was clearing out her deceased mothers work space, discovered a CD from a band called Sunset Curve, then decided to play it. For the last year, after her mother had died, Julie had no interest in music, and was having trouble performing it. As a result she lost her spot in school, but everything changes when three cute ghosts come into her life. Julie gets the courage to perform again, and in the process finds out that her new ghost friends can be seen by others, but only when they are preforming music with her. Of course it’s not always easy. There are twists and turns, and some shady characters along the way.
Final Thoughts:
Going into it I had no idea what to expect, I thought it would be your average, silly teen show, I didn’t think it would appeal to me. But I was pleasantly surprised. It’s cute, corny, and charming. It managed to really draw me into it, and left me wanting more. I thoroughly enjoyed this show, looking forward to a season 2, and now I am curious about the original one it was based on.
The cast is adorable, talented, and fun to watch. The show felt like a combination of Jem & the Holograms, and a cute K-Drama (I love k-dramas, btw). If you love good cheesy fun, with some emotion thrown in, I suggest you check it out. Binge it alone, or watch it with family.
